Summer assaults outdoor cushions with the worst of everything - sunscreen smears, BBQ drips and splashes, red-wine spills…bird mess…. The secret is in addressing the problem as quickly and gently as possible, so you don’t destroy the fabric’s waterproof finish. How To Begin: Always check the care label before you start. Avoid strong bleach solutions unless specified by the manufacturer as these can damage fabric coating.
Sunscreen
Since sunscreen is oily, blot (do not rub) Use a bi-carb or cornflour to absorb any greasy residue, leave for 15–30 mins and brush off. Wash in warm soapy water. Rinse well and air dry.
BBQ grease
Remove any solids with a spoon and then dab. Follow up the absorbent powder as above with a solution of degreasing dish soap. Start working from the outside of the stain in to keep it from spreading. Rinse gently as soap residue is a magnet for more dirt.
Red wine
Dry immediately with a clean cloth. Rinse well with cold water (hot can set stains) Mild detergent with a slightly wet dab. If your cover is removable and machine washable, launder in cold water as soon as possible.
Bird mess
Wear gloves. Carefully remove the solids and clean area with warm soapy water. Bird feces will stain and harbour bacteria. Use an outdoor fabric-safe disinfectant. Remove and dry thoroughly to avoid mould.
Top tip: all outdoor cushions should be completely dry after cleaning. Mix a little damp fabric with the UK humidity and it is not long before that musty smell is lingering in the air, or mould has appeared somewhere.
