  1. Tommy Hilfiger. Like many on this list, Tommy Hilfiger began his fashion career in humble beginnings in New York. With just one hundred and fifty Dollars, he set up a chain of clothes shops, with a bonus of a record store, hair salons and rock gigs, to great success in the 1970s. When this came to an end, Hilfiger went back to college and studied business and fashion. He started several firms before creating the fashion juggernaut of Tommy Hilfiger Inc. 2. Ralph Lauren. As with Hilfiger, Lauren was a New Yorker who came from humble beginnings and made it big. He first began selling ties in 1967 under his own named corporation. This stemmed from Laurens first job working for the tie manufacturer Beau Brummell. Lauren convinced him to let him have his own range, and Brummell agreed. Lauren used his love of sports to set up the “Polo” brand in 1968, and the distinctive Horsebound player motif has become synonymous with the brand.
  3. Ricardo Tisci. If you want to give your flagging brand a boost, it seems that Tisci is your man. Recently responsible for lifting Givenchy out of the doldrums, his menswear designs  (printed T-shirts and stylishly elaborate trainers) for the brand has become the staples of many wardrobes. He is now turning around the Burberry brand dragging it into the luxury streetwear market and redesigning the whole range to make it more relevant. 1. Virgil Abloh. Considered to be the most influential menswear designer alive today, Abloh has the interesting distinction of once being a fellow classmate and longtime chum of Kanye West. Abloh has been able to merge and mix the style of street style and streetwear with that of High fashion. He was also the first man of colour to take the lead of a major fashion house when he was made Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director of Menswear. A considerable achievement indeed.

These designers, two established and two relatively new, show that the world of men’s fashion and menswear is constantly evolving and adapting to recent trends. That includes those that were previously thought impossible to achieve or to sell. They also all show that with determination and a will to succeed, it can be done.
