I’m sure there must be some out there but for the rest of us, carpet cleaning will never be an exciting experience. It tends to rank alongside calling the boiler engineer or making a trip to the tip. When you arrange for your carpets to be cleaned you don’t look forward to the arrival of a van, a hose and a bill; you do it because you’ve told yourself it’s about time someone cleaned the blasted things already.

However, once the cleaners have gone, take your shoes off at the door as instructed and enter into a space which feels different and foreign with just your socks on.

Trying to describe what happens next without sounding like a lunatic is going to be tricky. The carpet seems to change into a completely different kind of floor. Its pile seems almost upright, like when it was brand-new and you’ll feel full of optimistic ideas for maintaining it.

Underfoot, it somehow feels softer and quieter too. And the colour: no longer the dingy grey but the bright and shiny grey that it was meant to be. Which is much better. You will walk back and forth across it several times for no reason. You will take your socks off to feel it properly. You will call someone else into the room and make them feel it too, and they will do the same slightly embarrassed shuffle across the floor, and neither of you will quite be able to explain why it feels so unreasonably good.

The smell is its own thing entirely. Clean carpet has a smell. Not a chemical smell, not that artificial freshness that comes from a can, just the absence of everything that had been quietly accumulating in there for the past however many years. Mud and crumbs and spilled drinks and the dog and time itself, all of it just gone. The room smells like a room again rather than like a room plus everything that has ever happened in it.

The part that actually surprises people.

It’s not just the carpet. It’s the way the whole room feels different afterwards. Lighter somehow. More like somewhere you’d actually want to spend time. People rearrange furniture. They notice the walls need painting. They start wondering what else they’ve been quietly living with without realising.

One clean carpet and suddenly you have standards again.
